On Tuesday, our year 13 BTEC business studies group travelled to London. Studying advertising, promotion and product branding this term, they started with a trip to the Museum of Brands. The museum is a real trip down memory lane, with an iconic look at all the product packaging from the Edwardian era right up to today, and how our most famous brands have developed their packaging and branding over time.

The students were very fortunate to be able to gain a glimpse inside the world of advertising by spending some time later in the day at the global advertising and marketing agency Ogilvy & Mather, whose clients include many well known brands; BP, Unilever, American Express, Vodafone & IBM to name just a few.

The agency gave them an introduction to some of the brands and work they do which included the new McVities Nibbles range. The students then took part in a brain storming exercise, very similar to how they might start getting ideas for a new advertising campaign. The brief was to come up with a campaign for the McVities Nibbles which would target and appeal to men.The visit culminated in a tour of the company including their top floor restaurant, with its iconic view of the Thames and the London Skyline – the roof terrace, the girls were told, is a must in the summer. The girls came back with wonderful ideas on how to improve the school and their potential businesses – there was even a mention that we had an ideal flat roof for a roof terrace!
