On Friday 23rd March, year 10-13 boys wrapped up their rugby season by playing an exhibition rugby match at Tidworth. This allowed the boys to demonstrate the skills they have been learning over the past term in a full-sided game and on a full-size pitch. Parents and students were invited to attend the event and the weather remained calm. With safety being a priority, a Dorset and Wilts county referee was also brought in to help ref the game.
Sports leaders and team captains, Callum Barry (team A) and Riley Humphreys (team B), carefully selected the teams and paid particular attention to positions which would lead to an evenly matched and highly competitive game.
Team B took control of the first half after a nervous start, with some good build up play, hard tackles and effective rucking. Riley Humphreys opened the scoring with a breaking run through the defensive line. Team A responded with some tough play from Dellan Long who was eventually rewarded, driving the ball over the try line. However, team B continued to dominate in the scrum and Fletcher Long, Blake Dible, Wade Browning and Guy Tuffin produced a number of effective plays to give Riley Humphreys another try and team B the lead going into the second half.
After a quick team talk, team A came out firing with some great line outs by Troy Diffey and Wesley Cooper and some solid play in the pack. George Aris, Ayrton Gardner, Clayton Barry, Troy Diffey and Wyatt Tuffin were all rewarded with great tries and Dellan Long was relentless with the conversions which gave team A the lead. Team B continued to push and Jack Taylor continued to drive the ball forward but, despite late tries by Wade Browning and Sheridan Gardner, team B ultimately came up short, as Callum Barry’s team A was victorious.
39 (Team A) – 24 (Team B)
Players of the game: Dellan Long and Troy Diffey.
